What are the newest marketing trends and techniques for 2011?

1. Social Networking
While certainly not a new marketing technique, the ways in which we use social networking for marketing purposes for our products/services are rising. Where previously companies would simply advertise in the side ad space and hope for clicks, they've gone one step further with things like Facebook pages that take advantage of Facebook's new fan "liking" features as well as to connect their websites to facebook and twitter directly. What's next? Facebook has previously talked about the allowance (with the user's permission I'm sure) for it to tell websites what you like so that content can be filtered specifically for you. This would allow user's a completely customized experience while they browse the web.

2. Mobile Mobile Mobile
Last year we saw the new iPhone4, iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab (drool). This year expect tons of new phones and tablet computers to hit the market. As each company works hard to outdo their competition, mobile friendly websites and "apps" will become the norm. If your company has something that updates regularly (even just your recent news and events) making it an app or otherwise mobile friendly will score you some big points among your competitors. An
important point here though is don't just target your mobile site/app to the iPhone. The millions of non-iPhone users of Android, Blackberry, Windows and Symbian (Nokia) like to browse the mobile internet just as much as their iPhone counterparts.

3. Interactivity
Also not a new concept but definitely an important one. The more for your customer to do and see on your website, the better. Obviously, don't go crazy. But adding in extras like a Google map on your contact page that allows customers to get directions to your location is priceless. Widgets that allow your customers to see your up to date news or follow you on one of the social networking sites is also becoming the norm.

4. Less is more
Even if your company sells cardboard boxes, there is going to be someone interested in the newest model. Make it easy for them to find. Quick and easy information is key for websites this year. If your front page has more than 2 paragraphs it just may be too much. Slim it down so even the most impatient user can figure out what you offer and put the rest of the info on the inside pages for the folks who love a good read.

5. To the cloud
Cloud storage doesn't sound like a marketing technique, I hear you say, but think about it this way, a company that can access their info from anywhere can also help a customer from anywhere. It can offer quick and easy upload/download access to files for both you and your customer and can lend to a greener initiative that a potential or current client may appreciate. It can allow you and your staff to collaborate on documents and give your clients temporary access to download/view them. 2011 is the year of fast and easy information. What's faster than NOW?
