How important is networking?

I have always had the firm belief that you are what you live.

Remember back to your school days and take a look at the kids on the playground. If a child wanted to be popular, he/she hung around other popular kids and did the kind of things that made kids popular. If a kid was really interested in playing a musical instrument, he/she enrolled in band and became friends with other musicians. There are far too may examples to list, but I hope you can see where I am going.

I believe that when an individual is of a business mind he/she needs to associate with fellow business minds. Talk to other people who are running a business and learn from them. Ask questions and offer advice. In my mind, networking is like building a foundation to a home. Lets call that home, Life. Regardless of what it is you are doing with your life, the people you associate with - sorry NETWORK with-are who you choose to be like.

As harsh as this will come across, it is merely truth I am speaking. If you associate with people who thrive in life, you will as well. It will be natural to ride the same wave. If your choice is to associate with people who do nothing but go to the bar, then thats where you will end up too. At the end of the day it all comes down to one thing. WHAT DO YOU WANT? If you know what you want, then go get it. It will not be done without networking though. You will need to learn, and it only makes sense to seek help from the professionals. I am not talking professional as in, "suit and tie". I am talking the person whose life you want to emulate. They have the experience that you want. Ask them how they got there. What did they do?

To conclude, I will say that networking is crucial. It builds your foundation and with that you grow roots. Reach for the sky and let the sun be your target then label it with your goal.

Lastly...

I sincerely believe that only the Enigma can blossom without the efforts of networking, and though this seems glamourous...it is not realistic.

Interesting article, I just want to add something from my experience.

I have worked for people who have the philosophy that networking in business is all about meeting people who can do something for them. I found this slightly distasteful. It's a case of "Hi. what do you do?" and if the answer offers no potential financial gain - move on.

In my experience networking is about meeting interesting people and getting to know them and what they do WITHOUT an agenda. Then it becomes truly valuable.
