How can I cutback on stress in the workplace?

Mother Nature has a wicked sense of humour hey? Let's kick off the camping season with rain...and let's top it off with a wee bit o'snow. Chuckle.

I had a fantastic weekend to be truthful, but I am not one of those individuals who gets upset over random events that happen to be far from my control. What was in my control was how I was going to feel about the weekend, and what I was going to do with my time. I understand that I have zero ability to control the weather, as well as a minimal amount of dollars to fund for an impromptu trip to 'somewhere-so-nice' every time it rains. I also understand that sitting around being angry over something I cannot control makes the situation WORSE not better, and it is an extreme waste of time.

What I have just lightly touched on is not something that I learned over night, and I am pleased to say that it has taken me a fantastic amount of time. I am pleased because what I was learning was my subject - ME. I began asking myself generic questions that most people ask one another when they meet like, "how do you like spending your time?". I know that sounds a little strange, but it is not an easy question to answer honestly. I have found that responses from most people are the same. Camping, hiking, golf etc. Sure, I believe these are hobbies that are enjoyed when done, but if it has been 5 years since you last did it, is it really something you like doing with your time?

Regardless of where you are in life, and what your subject of interest is, I think serious thought should be put into what you can and cannot control. Just as an example...think about you and your restaurant. Does it make your situation better when torrential rains make for a slow night and you get angry? No I didn't think so. What you can control is the amount you spend on labour dollars and food costs. Monitor what you can and accept that not everything is under your command, and work with what you have. Knowing what you have is really what it is all about. Take stock in those things that are in your power to change.

The laws are minute, but powerful. I do not know anyone who is unhappy when they have awareness and understanding in regards to their own power. I encourage people to get to know themselves and to absorb their subject whether it is their job, their business or their spouse. Get intimate and learn the naked truth.
